Cheap travel insurance is advised for backpackers looking to broaden their experiences by travelling to South American countries like Peru.
According to insurance.essentialtravel.co.uk, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) has found that a greater accessibility and a desire from travellers to go further, has been responsible for an increased number of visits to the country. This is especially true among younger people such as those on a gap year between college and university.
A spokesperson from Aito told the website: "It has become far more accessible, it's easier to get to and once you're there it's not something that was perceived as intrepid as it was a while back."
The number of Britons travelling beyond Europe and North America has risen by three per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics Travel and Tourism.
South America is increasingly popular among backpackers as it offers a wide range of experiences against a backdrop of cultures that contrast sharply with other countries such as Australia and New Zealand.
